Faith moved her Dance of the Gardenias into the Chicago clubs. Though she would return to her fans and defend her title, it seemed she was looking for her own “balloon dance,” something that would keep the headlines fresh and the crowds coming.

She would have thought her inclusion at the Fair would bring her the kind of national recognition Sally enjoyed. It did not.

Faith wore a big diamond ring on her wedding finger. In publicity photos she wore fur coats, tailored suits, and good jewelry.

Though modern-day historians say that immediately following the Chicago fair Faith faded into oblivion, it is far from the truth. She continued to work, mostly in Chicago and New York, constantly lauded for giving an artistic performance.

Working too hard, she had a return of ill health. She was pale and “consumptive.” Faith downed cod-liver oil to “build up her frail body.”10

Faith, and to a degree Sally, were dancing against time. Though scores of women were picking up fans, the dance was becoming dated.
